GAY is a 3 letter word

I hate politics.  I hate wishy-washy politics even more.  I hate watching talking heads for public figures…like press secretaries….bend and mold and reform sentences based on the audience at hand.  I know we all play to our audience and often times that is completely necessary.  I don’t however feel that that is something that is acceptable when it is a matter of peoples lives and rights and a matter of the speakers integrity.  I voted for Barrack Obama.  I listened to his speeches.  I heard him chant Yes We Can…and I screamed it back with him in a sea of many who felt that we were witnessing the election of the person who would truly keep their promises and fight for equality for all human beings.  I thought that I was seeing the person who would make it illegal for me to be considered a 2nd class citizen by law.  I know that there will always be people who don’t agree with my ‘lifestyle.’ And to be honest, there are things I do in my own lifestyle that I know I should do less of and that could be  harmful.  Being Gay is not one of those things.  Being Gay…with my partner and friend and soulmate, Andrew actually makes me Happy and Bright and teaches me to Grow and Learn about Myself and Others….Being in love teaches me how to be a more Compassionate person and to Think Of Others before myself….Gay is a word.  It has 3 letters…and many different conotations.  Gay used to be a word that was hurtful to me.  Gay was a word that paired with Queer and Faggot and Homo used to scare the living shit out of me.  Gay was the word that was thrown at me over and over again by my peers to make me feel less than…to make me hurt…..Gay was used with malice.   Gay was the idea that lurked in  the back of my mind and haunted me….could the feelings I had be so wrong? If they were, why did I have them?  Gay is just a word to me now.  It lost its power when I decided that no 3 letter combination from our alphabet could have control over me.  Gay is just a word. A word.  Equality is also a word.  Equality is also a human right.  No one person should ever have the idea that anyone is lesser than themselves.  No one should ever feel that people of one group are better than another.  We have words like Racism, Prejudice, Bigotry, Xenophobia for a reason.  These words are words that give power to Unnacceptance and Hate. I am still waiting for the person(s) who is going to help me and millions of people in this country realize the meaning of our United States Constitution that “We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”  I may still be waiting for the ‘Change you can believe in,” but out of the hypocrisy and political mess that is played out before our very eyes on a daily basis…New heros are being born.   The change is happening.  There is a movement for equality.  There are people who understand that humanity has the word human in it for a reason.  There is a purporse in the world and we are told to pick our battles wisely.  This is a battle I pick.  I pick Equality.  I pick Acceptance.  I pick being Counted and Heard. I pick Peace. I pick Compassion.   I pick Civil Rights.  I pick Love.  I pick knowing that GAY is just a 3 letter word…but the words that that tiny 3 letter word can inspire…Will help me in my battle. It just so happens that there are a gazillion words out there.  The power that we give to them and create for them are up to us.  Harness your power and be the change because “YES WE FUCKING CAN!”
